MONSOON: GOOD OR BAD?

MONSOON: GOOD OR BAD?

India is a country that is quite dependent on rains. We all know that and believe that to be true. But isn’t that from the times that we were purely agriculture oriented? But this is 2025 and whole lot of other industries and sectors abound us and many of them are affected differently by the rain.

For eg. Travel. While Goa in the rains in advertised, rain in Mahableshwar or the Northeast is not! Heavy rains disrupt road, rail and air traffic. So, people may be travelling less?

And if people travel less, that will impact the Hotel industry, no? Maybe not the five star properties or big resorts but certainly the vast majority of others who are part of the hospitality business. So, rains are not so good for either of them.

But rains bring with them dampness and possible infections and a lot of people get taken sick. That can increase business for Doctors who will then prescribe medicines which can be beneficial for Pharma.

This summer was erratic and the expected boom in AC companies and their stocks did not occur. Come monsoon and their sales of coolers and ACs will go down further, even perhaps of fans? Related to summer is Ice creams and soft drinks. Barring some lifestyle products here, the run of the mill player may take a hit too.

Cement prices take a hit and construction work slows down. This then has a fall out on many allied segments in construction. Coal production and perhaps mining, in general also slows down impacting power generation too.

So, these are some things to consider about monsoon. While a good Kharif season needs a good monsoon, a proper distribution of the rain is also necessary. But sometimes that gets skewed too and while some areas get early or excess rainfall other areas may get late or much reduced rainfall.

Correlations to the stock market to what you see outside your window may not exactly correct!
